The Makita 2030 is a vintage jointer planer made of mostly cast iron. What makes it special is that although it is a single machine, the jointer and planer elements are separate. This means you have no conversion time from one function to the other.
Separate Jointer and Planer Functions

These Makita 2030 combos have been around for a long time and anyone who is familiar with them wishes they still made them. They are well made workhorse machines in a compact platform making them great for the hobbyist woodworker. I bought this machine about six months ago planning to do a full restoration.
On most modern jointer planers, both the jointer and the planer use the same cutterhead. On the Makita 2030, however, there are two cutterheads. These are driven by a single belt from a motor in the base of the machine.
The planer element is very similar to that of the bigger, industrial-grade Makita 2040, just smaller. The jointer is relatively thin, but with very long (1500mm) tables, making it excellent for edge jointing.
Other features
At 125kg the machine is very heavy, probably thanks to it being mostly made from cast iron. Its feed rate is quite high, making it less suitable for woods with difficult grain. However, there was also an extra sprocket set that could be changed to set the feed rate to a lower speed.

Replacement Blades: Finding replacement blades for the jointer of the 2030 is a bit difficult. There were some genuine blades for the jointer available via Amazon, but they seem to be unavailable now.
For the planer there are Freud blades, also on Amazon, that should fit the Makita 2030.
J.J. Short specializes in the manufacture of close-tolerance rubber covered rollers made with a wide variety of rubber coatings including, neoprene, Urethane, Buna N, Nitrile, EDPM, Silicone, Fluorosilicone, Viton ®, Tan Gum, Natural Rubber, Hypalon ® (CSM) and other types of rubber in Shore A and Shore D hardnesses. For various material choices visit our material reference chart.
We work hand in hand with you to insure that your exacting design specifications are met and we recommend areas where we believe we can save you money. Rollers can be solid rubber, hollow sleeves, straight or crowned, grooved or segmented.
For new rollers you can supply the core for us to cover or we can supply complete. We work with solid rolls and hollow cylinders made from a wide range of metals and plastics including cold-rolled steel, stainless steel, aluminum, Delrin, UHMW, PTFE and more. Journals are toleranced tightly for the bearings on which the roll turns. New cores can be made in varying quantities from one to several thousand. Plating and coating services are available if required for your application.
With the new metal cores in hand, the rollers are cleaned and coated with a bonding agent and are manufactured by molding, wrapping or extruding rubber onto the metal. Using heat and pressure vulcanization cures the rubber, and bonds the rubber to the core. In the case of conveyor rollers many times a permanent bond is not desired so a rubber sleeve is made slightly undersized from the core diameter so the sleeve can be pneumatically slid over the core for a tight, non-slip fit. Cynoacrylate bonding of rubber and metal after curing is also available and particularly useful for segmented rollers, this includes secondary operations to assemble. For plastic cores, rubber sleeves are made and either blown onto the core or glued.
